Advent #22: Computer beats man?

The good thing is: you just don't get tired. They don't care about the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You work and analyze 24/7. Sick leave? Not true. A bad day? Nor does it exist. At most once a system failure. And that is why there are already applications based on artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine that are better than experts in diagnosing certain diseases: computer beats man.

In Heidelberg, artificial intelligence was used in a study to compete against dermatologists; the task: to recognize the highly dangerous black melanoma. The machine was better.

There are now countless such studies. Especially in radiology, algorithms show their advantages: they are fast, they are incorruptible. But only if they have been taught the right thing. Without good programming, it doesn't work. Humans teach computers so that computers can beat humans. Pretty clever.

AI applications will revolutionize oncology. Because they guarantee that we do not lose track in a jungle of health data and can reveal the secret of why a tumor grows or not.

Even with rare diseases, such as Alström syndrome, AI can do great things: The prerequisite for this:

The few pieces of data that exist – and that are little linked worldwide – are brought together and analyzed.

Bet that this will result in approaches that could take research to a new level? AI helps us unravel the great mysteries of our time.

Will DOCTORS become unemployed as a result of AI? No. Certainly not. But certainly better. Because if the machine takes over the diagnosis (and the bottom line is even better), there is more time for the patients. And more time for research.

That's pretty good news; after all, many problems of medicine are still unsolved. Artificial intelligence, if we use it intelligently, will help us solve these problems. We just have to want it. And then do it.

Because the unthinkable is possible.
